Master's Degree Classical Archaeology



The Master's degree programme in Classical Archaeology can be studied in both the 1-subject and the 2-subject model.

This degree programme is suitable for graduates of the following subjects: archaeology, history and other cultural studies subjects.

Start: Winter and summer semester

Duration: 4 semesters

Language of instruction: usually German

Admission: not restricted

Admission requirements: compulsory counselling interview with the responsible academic advisor prior to enrolment/re-enrolment, knowledge of Latin and knowledge of two modern foreign languages. One of these should be English, the second another academically relevant foreign language.

the skills acquired in an archaeological or ancient studies B.A. degree programme are deepened through individual specialisation in the field of Greco-Roman antiquity. Interdisciplinarity and professional practice guarantee an education at a high academic level.

  • genesis and development of ancient art and other types of artefacts
  • consolidation of cultural-historical contexts using the example of ancient cultures

  • independent development of and reflection on current academic positions

A work placement is part of the curriculum. Duration: at least 4 weeks

A stay abroad is recommended. It is completed in the 2nd-3rd semester. Duration: 1-2 semesters.
Numerous partner universities and institutes in Germany and abroad offer the opportunity to study abroad and change universities during the degree programme.

Proof of knowledge of Latin at the level of the Latinum or knowledge of Ancient Greek at the level of the Graecum must be provided when registering for the MA thesis.
