Master' Degree Pre- and Protohistory



The Master's degree programme in Pre- and Protohistory can be studied in both the 1-subject and the 2-subject model.

This degree programme is suitable for graduates of the following subjects: archaeology, history and other cultural studies subjects.

Start: Winter and summer semester

Duration: 4 semesters

Language of instruction: usually German

Admission: not restricted

Admission requirements: compulsory counselling interview with the responsible academic advisor prior to enrolment/re-enrolment, knowledge of Latin and knowledge of two modern foreign languages. One of these should be English, the second another academically relevant foreign language.

This degree programme is unique because...

the knowledge and skills acquired in an archaeological B.A. degree programme are deepened through individual specialisation in the field of prehistoric cultures. A strong professional practice with cooperating institutions contributes to the education at an academic level.

  • knowledge of places and monuments of prehistoric cultures
  • independent development and reflection of current scientific positions
  • problems of prehistoric epochs and their material heritage
  • archaeological professions (preservation of archaeological monuments)

  • conditions of origin, functional, social and cultural-historical contexts as well as expressive intentions of artefacts
  • genres, media, functions, techniques, contexts, forms and styles
  • deepening cultural-historical contexts using the example of ancient cultures


you bring to the table:

  • basic historical and geographical knowledge,
  • good powers of observation,
  • curiosity about cultural-historical contexts and issues,
  • the willingness to independently research groups of monuments and to read numerous specialised texts,
  • the ability to present specialised content in oral and written form,
  • idealism, coupled with frustration tolerance

you enjoy:

  • critically examining the material legacy of past civilisations in the seminar and on site,
  • communicating and imparting knowledge, developing own ideas

you can fight through:

  • the wealth of archaeological finds from many excavation sites from many eras and cultures,
  • extensive foreign-language literature (e.g. English, French, Spanish), the composition of written papers and oral forms of presentation
  • in museums and exhibitions
  • in the preservation of archaeological monuments
  • at universities and other higher education institutions
  • in adult education and tourism
  • in cultural management

A work placement is part of the curriculum. Duration: at least 4 weeks

A stay abroad is recommended. It is completed in the 2nd-3rd semester. Duration: 1-2 semesters.
Partner universities: Numerous partner universities and institutes in Germany and abroad offer the opportunity to study abroad and change universities during the degree programme.
