The excavations of the ancient city of Miletus have been closely associated with the Ruhr University Bochum since 1989. Since then, the Milet Archive has existed at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences. The archive contains all accessible text and image documents from the more than one hundred years of excavation history of Miletus.
The Milet Archive has two main tasks. As a repository for the documentation, it is an important point of contact for the various project staff involved in the ongoing research. In view of the long tradition of the excavation and its great relevance, the old holdings should also be accessible to external researchers. Ongoing maintenance is required to preserve such an archive. Among other things, the digitization of the archives that has already begun should contribute to this.
Copies of the materials from the first excavations under Theodor Wiegand (1899-1933) and Carl Weickert (1938-1959), the originals of which are in the Pergamon Museum and the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin, are available. These include the first topographical survey of the city site by C. Humann before the start of the excavations and the entire series of excavation diaries from that time.
The documentation from the years 1960-1988 was transferred from Frankfurt am Main and Istanbul to Bochum. Since then, the documents from the excavations on archaic Milet, which were carried out under Volkmar von Graeve from the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at RUB, have been added. In summer 2014, a new research project on Hellenistic-Roman residential development on the Humeitepe began under the direction of Christof Berns, which will further increase the holdings of the Milet Archive.
The photographic holdings include photographic prints, negatives, photographic portfolios, slides and glass plates from the older excavations. The archive also holds plans and drawings relating to the research in Milet.
